雪蛤是生長於中國東北長白山林區，山脈地勢高而寒溝澤地帶的一種珍貴蛙種。每年的秋季，正是雪蛤儲存能量準備冬眠的時候，也是雪蛤生命力最強之時，尤其是雌雪蛤的輸卵管，聚集了來年繁殖後代的所需營養，此時的雪蛤，其滋補功能更是無與倫比。由於這種蛤蟆在冬天會潛入在雪地下或冰川河底冬眠長達五個月，因它比較耐寒，故稱為「雪蛤」，其中尤以長白山雪蛤最為名貴。

雪蛤作為養顏補品的功效已廣為人知。《中藥大辭典》記載「雪蛤補腎益精、潤肺養陰，治病後虛弱，肺癆」。雪蛤性味咸平，不燥不火，含有大量的蛋白質、氨基酸、各種微量元素和少量有益人體的激素，尤其適合作為日常滋補養生食材。
